What are the benefits of HP+?

HP+ is a smart printing system that gives you premium cloud-connected solutions, an extra year of HP coverage, 2 years of exclusive HP Smart app features, and 6 months optional subscription to the Instant Ink replenishment service.

What are the requirements of this HP+ printer?

This HP+ printer only works with Original HP Toner Cartridges and requires an HP account and ongoing internet connection for the life of the printer.

Does an HP+ printer require a subscription to the Instant Ink service or other ongoing costs?

No, there are no additional costs associated with HP+. You can choose to enroll in an optional subscription for Instant Ink and receive 6 months subscription, but it is not required.

What is the HP Smart app and why should I use it?

HP Smart app is a top-rated app that enables you to set up your printer, print/scan from virtually any device anywhere, and access exclusive HP+ features. The Smart app is required to set up your HP+ printer from a mobile device or your computer.

How does HP protect my privacy with a connected, account-based device?

Privacy and data protection are extremely important to HP. HP collects certain printer and usage data to improve the printing experience. HP does not access content from any files shared through the cloud or printed on our printers.

On a *purely* technical level, this is a legitimately well-built and thoughtfully engineered device, and the printer is more than happy to work without an internet connection whatsoever, using all of the same protocols that have been standard for well over a decade now. Unfortunately, it renders itself a brick after about 15 pages unless you let HP (or any malicious actor with sufficient access to HP's servers) exfiltrate whatever data they want from it. I believe you might be able to circumvent this by doing a factory reset every time, but let's not kid ourselves. Nobody is going to do this. Because these protocols have been standardized for so long, any printer outside of specialty cases does not require an app to function in the modern day. There might be a couple more features, but it's *entirely optional*. You do not *need* the app. They need *you* on the app. If it weren't for this, I would be extremely happy and praising this device for being an excellent product to anyone who cared to listen to me ramble about a printer, but now we're here at the opposite end of the spectrum.Don't be misled, the 'e' (short for 'e-waste') in the model number and the 'HP+' (short for 'hateful printer plus!') branding means that this is an insidiously invasive piece of future garbage that will end up polluting landfills in a few years (if you're *lucky*, exactly two years after the last one rolls off the assembly line and the model gets discontinued, which will probably be soon judging by the price drops) when they inevitably decide to stop supporting it to get you to buy the next one. This is an absolutely disgusting anti-consumer practice and should not be rewarded with your hard-earned money. They subsidize this model with your data, the 'standard' printer that doesn't come with 'premium features' (mostly selling your data and having so much planned obsolescence it'd make Bernard London blush) costs about twice as much at the time of writing. It's safe to say that it'll be the frequency of printing, your location (including GPS data, instead of just IP-based and wireless SSID-based geolocation techniques. Why does it have GPS? Not any reason that's bound to be a good one for you, that's for sure. It's visible right there in the web portal, which is quite fun to discover.), if you use their ink subscription service, how often you replace the cartridge, what types of paper you commonly use, how much you use the scanner, if you primarily use the ADF or the flatbed section of the scanner, how many pages you print at a time, how many devices are on your local network, the MAC addresses of those devices (to sell for better correlation of households and habits), what type of devices they are, and so on and so forth. It's simply not enough for you to give them your hard-earned cash for the product *and* the consumables for the product, (since this is a 'plus' printer instead of a 'standard' printer, it doesn't allow for third-party cartridges, so it will either come from HP or nowhere at all) *you* have to become their product too. This all comes together form a *comically* anti-consumer device on the whole and this practice *should not* be rewarded in any way, shape, or form. It should be derided for the disgusting and ethically bankrupt thing it is.*Please* don't waste your time and money. You deserve much better than this.
